Red notices issued for five provinces as Met Dept forecasts heavy rain

Sri Lanka Met department is issuing Red warnings for heavy rainfalls and strong winds for several districts in five provinces calling on the public to take action to minimize damage.

The provinces are Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern province.

The Met department said very heavy rainfalls above 150 millimetres will occur in Matale, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts today until late evening.

The statement said wind speeds can increase up to 50 kilometres per hour at times across the island particularly in the Northern, North Central and North Western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The weatherman is also asking the public to be vigilant about possible landslides in hilly areas, water inundation in low lying areas and uprooting of large avenue trees.

Department said until 4.30 am today the districts with a high risk recorded rainfall above 100 millimetres.

In the sea areas around the island, wind speed can increase up to 60-70 kilometres per hour off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanturai via Mannar.

Also, wind speed can increase up to 60-65 kilometres per hour in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Met Department said these sea areas can be rough to very rough during the day.

“The other sea areas can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to (50-60) Kilometres per hour” statement by the Met department said.

The Met department said nearshore areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle may experience the effect of swell waves having 2.5 to 3.5 meters’ height and asks fishing and naval communities to be vigilant in this regard.
