The government has decided to change the public day at ministries to Monday from Wednesday.
The decision has been taken as currently ministers and MPs avoid attending parliament sessions on Wednesdays as they have to be available for the public day, co-cabinet spokesman Udaya Gammanpila said.
He said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had observed a drop in attendance in Parliament on Wednesdays.
Gammanpila said that public officials were expected to avoid conducting other meetings, seminars and inquiries on the public day so that they would be available to focus on public issues.
The public day at ministries has been on Wednesdays for 60 years and has been changed for the first time, he added.
