The number of inmates in prisons for the first time in the country’s history has surpassed 30,000.
A new report released by the Department of Prisons said as of the 9th of September 30,054 inmates are housed at prisons.
However, the Department said prisons can only hold a capacity of 11,000 prisoners. 28,469 are male inmates while 1,585 are female inmates.
1,404 inmates who have filed appeals are also in prison while 21,439 persons are in remand custody over pending cases.
7,211 are convicted prisoners. 43 children are in prisons with their mothers who have been convicted.
195 foreigners are also imprisoned. Meanwhile President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued directives to take over the Bogambara Prison.
State Minister of Prison Reforms & Prisoners Rehabilitation Sudarshini Fernandopulle said the Bogambara Prison will be taken over with the objective of reducing congestion at prisons.
