Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is currently monitoring Chinese mobile applications amidst several countries going ahead to ban some of these applications.
Director General of TRCSL Oshada Senanayake said that Sri Lanka was watching the global situation about these apps before taking any decision.
He said their organisation plans to inform Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) to monitor the situation.
Mr Senanayake said that they also hope to take up the issue with cyber security forums before deciding.
Meanwhile, the Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka said they hope to take up the issue with the Defence Ministry, calling them to take necessary action.
The Government of India has banned 224 Chinese mobile applications, including top social media platforms such as TikTok, WeChat and Helo, to counter what they called a threat posed by these applications to the country’s “sovereignty and security”.
