New demerit system for driver’s licenses

State Minister Dilum Amunugama says the government is hoping to introduce a demerit system for new driver’s licenses.

He said at the outset when an individual obtains a licence, 100 points will be awarded.

The State Minister further noted demerit points will be determined based on the traffic offences and based on charges levelled by police officers.

He added when a license has zero points, it will be deemed an invalid license.

The State Minister said the government is also hoping to introduce commercial and non-commercial licences in future. (Newsradio)
