The Governor of the Northern Province Mrs. P. S. M. Charles today ordered education officials in the Province to close all schools in the Northern Province on the 3rd and 4th of December.
The Governor said the decision was reached following the red notice issued by the Department of Meteorology pertaining to the inclement weather.
The Department said the deep depression is expected to intensify in to a cyclone and will likely cross Sri Lanka.
The Department said the cyclone will move West-North-westwards and cross the Eastern coast between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro tomorrow.
The Governor stated in the event of public life being affected, schools may have to be used as temporary shelters.
A special programme has been implemented in the event of storms, heavy rain and inundation owing to the possible inclement weather.
It was noted that owing to the coronavirus pandemic large groups cannot be accommodated in one school.
Therefore, the Governor informed Secretaries of Districts to ensure that in the event that individuals are displaced, to house a family in one classroom each while complying to health guidelines.
