Attention has been drawn towards introducing an early voting system for those involved in essential duties, hospitalised persons and those working overseas, to cast their ballots at elections.
The Chairman of the National Election Commission, Nimal Punchihewa said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has agreed to appoint a Parliament Select Committee pertaining to the matter.
Nimal Punchihewa expected the Committee to commence formulating the mechanism in January.
He noted that a number of persons face difficulties to vote at elections due to the nature of their work or due to their circumstances.
The Elections Chief said media personnel, some frontline workers and those hospitalized are not eligible for postal voting as well.
He noted therefore several modifications have been made to the existing voting mechanism and the legislation process will begin through the Parliament Select Committee.
