Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila says the decision to increase fuel prices was taken collectively by the President, Prime Minister and the government.
Speaking at a media briefing, Minister Gammanpila said the Premier granted permission in writing.
The media briefing was called by the Minister in response to the statement issued by the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, calling for Minister Gammanpila’s resignation claiming the fuel price revision was arbitrary and raised many issues in the country.
Minister Gammanpila noted the Cost of Living Committee also approved the fuel price revision.
He added officials present while discussing the matter included the President, Prime Minister, Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana, Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma and Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa, State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal and State Minister of Consumer Affairs Lasantha Alagiyawanna.
He stated many issues were discussed at length at the meeting, while he merely announced the decision reached by the government.
Minister Gammanpila also challenged the SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam to an open debate on the matter.
The Minister questioned what authority MP Kariyawasam had, to make such a statement, as the Leader and Chairman of the SLPP were unaware of the statement.
He challenged MP Kariyawasam to reveal all senior SLPP officials present at the meeting, during which the relevant decision was reached to call for his resignation, adding he will not be able to avoid the debate as media will ensure it takes place.
Minister Gammanpila added MP Kariyawasam should know of the consequences of issuing such a statement.
