Minister of Education Prof G.L. Peiris says they are hoping to reopen nearly 3,000 schools in the month of July.
Minister Peiris said health authorities have given the green light to reopen schools with less than 100 students.
This includes 1,439 schools with less than 50 students and 1,523 schools with a student body between 50 and 100.
Speaking to media at the Education Ministry premises today, Minister Peiris confirmed that following discussions with the President, they have come to an agreement to vaccinate all 242,000 teachers before resuming academic activities.
Therefore, the Education Minister assured that they will resume academic activities at some schools this month, adding that other schools will also gradually reopen by following strict health guidelines.
The Minister recalled that it was decided during talks with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, that schools cannot remain closed indefinitely.
Minister of Education GL Peiris said discussions were also held on the need to formulate a plan to reopen all 10,000 schools in the island, in line with the new normal.
