President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says school students will be able to receive the Pfizer vaccine doses as soon as approval is granted by health authorities.
President Rajapaksa made this observation when the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 met earlier today.
The President during the meeting has emphasized the need to complete vaccinating the 20-29 age category individuals within the next two weeks.
Meanwhile, during the meeting, a decision was taken to extend the current island-wide lockdown for further two weeks until the 13th of September.
The President has claimed that since the country was under lockdown for more than three months in 2020, for the first time Sri Lanka’s economy contracted.
President Rajapaksa noted that assessments must be made considering Sri Lanka is a small economy and the impact such decisions will have on businesses.
The President has also noted that several countries are now open for tourists.
The Head of State has directed health authorities to issue health guidelines to reopen the country for tourists while taking forward the coronavirus mitigation efforts.
