The Government Medical Officers’ Association has requested the Minister of Health to refrain from administering the Pfizer vaccine to youth between the ages of 20 to 29 years.
GMOA Media Spokesman Dr. Samantha Ananda said the Sinopharm vaccine was recommended for this age group.
Dr. Ananda said the GMOA made a request to the Health Minister to provide the stock of Pfizer vaccines in the country to school children.
He said organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that the Pfizer vaccine is suitable for children between the ages of 12-18.
He noted four million Pfizer vaccine doses are due to arrive in the country in October adding the GMOA recommended using the stock to vaccinate children between the ages of 12-18.
Dr. Ananda said children contracting the coronavirus, and a concerning number of children succumbing to the virus, is the main reason behind the recommendation.
