State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners Rehabilitation Lohan Ratwatte has resigned from his portfolio.
The letter of resignation was directed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The President’s Media Division said the letter was accepted by the President.
The development comes as several factions including opposition Members of Parliament called for the resignation of a State Minister over his purported involvement in unruly incidents at the Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons recently.
Prison sources claimed a State Minister who was under the influence, entered the Colombo Prison Headquarters on the 6th of September with a group of friends while the same State Minister had entered the Anuradhapura Prison on the 12th in similar fashion.
It is reported that the State Minister with his firearm entered a prison cell holding former LTTE cadres and escorted several of them out of their cells.
The State Minister is said to have entered the Colombo Prison premises claiming to want to show his friends the gallows.
