State Minister Lohan Ratwatte claims he was not sacked by anyone and that he resigned from his ministerial portfolio as State Minister of Prison Management & Prisoners’ Rehabilitation on his own accord.
Speaking to the BBC Sinhala Service, State Minister Ratwatte said he resigned due to inconvenience caused to the government.
He resigned from the post yesterday, taking responsibility for the incidents which took place at Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons.
Meanwhile, an official from the Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed to the BBC that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is currently on an official visit to Italy, had telephoned State Minister Lohan Ratwatte and asked him to resign from his post.
Tamil National People’s Front Parliamentarian GG Ponnambalam taking to twitter said a State Minister who visited the Anuradhapura Prison on the afternoon of 12th September, on the Prisoners’ Day, had pointed a pistol at the prisoners and made them kneel.
Ratwatte will continue to hold the post of State Minister of Gem & Jewellery Related Industries.
