Don’t test gas cylinders at home -Litro

Litro Gas Lanka Limited has informed the public to refrain from using soap foam and other ingredients to test gas cylinders.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, Director Of Sales & Marketing Janaka Pathirathna said using soap foam and other ingredients to personally test the gas cylinder, is a dangerous situation adding that the gas cylinder must be sealed when brought home from the shop.

He added if the seal is removed, a regulator or safety cap must be attached.

Pathirathna noted the public should refrain from opening the valve and testing the cylinder.

Pathirathna requested the public to call the 1311 hotline if there are any concerns regarding the gas cylinder, after fixing the safety cap and leaving the cylinder outside.

Janaka Pathirathna noted that several purported gas leak explosions were reported in the country in recent days owing to substandard regulators and connecting pipes.

He said they have observed some explosions had occurred since individuals had used regulators which are over 15 years old while they have also used substandard connecting pipes and cookers.

He said despite such issues, certain social media users have misinterpreted the incidents and had attributed the explosion to gas leaks. Pathirathna said the public should be mindful of videos circulating on social media.

He said if there is a leak or any other concerns, the public should keep the cylinder outside of the premises and contact authorities through the 1311 hotline number.

On a separate note, he said they have concerns regarding the tests conducted by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation regarding the composition of gas in cylinders.

He said they have called for an independent inquiry over the matter.

Director Of Sales & Marketing Janaka Pathirathna said samples have been directed to the University of Moratuwa and another institution and they are waiting for the results.

He urged the public not to panic and follow the guidelines issued by authorities.
