Trade Unions to stage mass hartal campaign on May 6

The Inter-Company Employees’ Union has warned that a mass hartal campaign will be held on the 6th of May if the government does not comprehend the message of the 24-hour token strike.

Speaking to media, the President of the Union, Wasantha Samarasinghe said the mass hartal is the final warning to the President and the government to step down immediately.

Samarasinghe said the government must reach a decision during the Parliamentary session on the 4th and 5th of May.

Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin said today’s island-wide token strike was a complete success in the education sector.

Speaking to media, Stalin said all schools were closed today as all members participated in the trade union action.

The Chief Secretary said it was a great honour that management and other employees of education offices joined the union action.

Employees of Sri Lanka Posts engaged in a 24-hour token strike against the government today.

Speaking to media Joint Postal Trade Union Convenor Chinthaka Bandara said the strike commenced at midnight yesterday.

He said 26,000 postal employees across the country took part in the token strike.

Bandara stated the Central Mail Exchange and the postal headquarters in Colombo, 653 post offices, 3410 sub-post-offices and 100 supervising offices did not function in protest of the present administration

Employees of Sri Lanka Customs engaged in a protest against the present administration today.

Speaking to media, Superintendent of Customs Lal Weerakoon said at present a severe shortage of dollars exists in the country.

He stated at present there are no dollars at banks and the financial system while dollars are instead being traded in the black market.

Lal Weerakoon charged the Ministry of Finance and other government institutions of being responsible for the current situation.

The MP condemned the trade of foreign exchange at higher rates in the black market and said professionals should take a stand against such acts.
